We research ideas, opinions, barriers and wishes of clients and therapists with regard to relapse prevention after following a treatment focused on anxiety- and/or mood disorders. We conduct interviews with clients and therapists to discuss this topic. We will construct a survey based on the themes that emerge in these interviews. This survey could be used in mental health institutions to find out which factors might prevent the implementation of relapse prevention in daily practice.

Who can participate

  • Therapists

Therapists who at least completed one full treatment trajectory of a client focus on anxiety- and/or mood disorder.

  • Clients

clients whom received treatment for anxiety- and/or mood disorders in the past but do not currently fulfill the criteria for an anxiety- or mood disorder.

Background

We know that relapse prevention is beneficial for clients who received treatment for anxiety- and/or mood disorder, however many therapists don’t discuss this option with their clients. We want to better understand which factors play a role for therapists and clients and what there wishes are with regard to relapse prevention.

The research study

Our study follows a 2-stepped approach. First we will interview around 20 clients and 20 therapists to hear about their opinions, ideas and wishes with regard to relapse prevention and which barriers they might encounter. Following, we will analyse these interviews by conducting a thematic analysis. On the basis of this analysis we will set up a survey for therapists in order to get insight in factors in daily practice that influence whether relapse prevention is or is not discusses and/or offered in the mental health institution.

The researchers

Fleur Boonstra and Joske Lamberink do the recruitment and conduct the interviews and perform the qualitative analysis. Leonie Kreuze keeps an overview of the project and thinks along about the design of the research, the structure of the interviews and thinks along about the themes that emerge from the qualitative analyses.

Collaboration

We are conducting this research in collaboration with the University of Groningen
