Tic Genetics

Which genes cause tic disorders?

Status
Analysis

Tics are known to be largely genetically determined. However, the genes that cause tics have not yet been identified. The aim of this major international study is to discover the genes that cause Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders.

Background

TIC Genetics stands for Tourette International Collaborative Genetics. The purpose of this major international study is to discover the genes that cause Gilles de la Tourette syndrome and other tic disorders. Tic disorders - and associated issues such as attention problems and compulsive disorders - are becoming more common within families. It is not yet clear why one family member has tics while other family members do not.

The research study

Participants completed a single questionnaire. This included questions about tics, compulsions and other health issues, and about their birth. Participants also visited us once, to take a blood sample. We have collected data from around 3.000 people between 2018 en 2023.

Collaboration

TIC Genetics is a major international study, which started in 2011. Over 20 clinical sites in Europe, the United States and South Korea are participating in TIC Genetics. The project is funded by the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) in the United States.
