PAINT-CAU
Many children with hyperactive and inattentive behavior, concentration problems, or behavioral issues are treated with medication. There are also parent training programs or social skills training available for parents. Through this research, we aim to gain more insight into the reasons families and practitioners choose a specific treatment.
What is the goal of the study?
In the PAINT-CAU (“CAU” stands for “Care As Usual”) study, we investigate why parents, children, and practitioners choose a specific treatment, or in other words, what the predictors of treatment choices are for children with ADHD. Children who exhibit hyperactive or impulsive behavior or find it difficult to concentrate sometimes need assistance. They are often treated with medication, such as Ritalin. There are also many other treatments available, such as parent training and parent guidance, or social skills training. Understanding which factors predict which children receive which help can assist in providing the best possible support to other children and parents in the future.
How is the study structured?
We used short questionnaires to map how care is currently structured. It is important to assess the current practice of care because it remains unclear whether children with ADHD and their parents always receive the best and most appropriate care. For example, we do not yet know if ADHD care is provided as outlined in the ADHD guidelines.
How far along is the study?
The data collection for this research is complete and is currently being written up in scientific articles. The Academic Workplace for ADHD and Hyperactive Behavior is an important platform for disseminating the knowledge gained from this research: https://adhdendrukgedrag.nl/.
